ORGANIZATIONAL CHART OF THE DEPARTMENT OF ANAESTHESIOLOGY

The quality of healthcare offered at the Department of Anaesthesiology in a centre with a high number of deliveries/year (around 2,300-2,800 per year) is based on the existence of an experienced team and the existence of a well-defined organisation.

The labouring woman is cared for by a well-organised structure where her entire pregnancy is monitored closely. If she develops any condition (such as preeclampsia) or has a disease that might have an impact on the anaesthetic technique to be used for delivery (such as any coagulation disorder), the patient is referred by her obstetrician to a pre-anaesthesia consultation where her particular case is assessed and the most appropriate type of anaesthesia determined.

Lastly and as part of the integral medical care offered to the mother during her pregnancy, the clinic has started the so called “School for Mothers” which consist of a series of childbirth informative classes led by obstetricians, anaesthetists, paediatricians, and child care specialists and where other trained professionals teach physical exercise and relaxation techniques to help the mother prepare for labour and birth. These classes are intended to help the mother relax and cope during the labour process with more peace of mind and self-confidence so that the childbirth experience is as pleasant as possible.
